so i made the meeting today....and lived!!!!!!!
by oompa inall in all not really as bad as it could have been..........i am sooo grateful for that 30 min talk now....and though dreadful overall (if you were listening!
).....and that is the key to my success.
i am really good at totally tuning out what is being preached....i mean i could not tell you one single thing about the talk or wt study....i only even looked up one scripture and that was after the fact because i happened hear that stupid term "system of things" and i had only brought my tiny kj bible and of course it said "world"....and i kinda just smiled at how nice and simple that was.. my wt came in very handy as i was able to use it to totally hide my cell phone and was texting olin moles ghost who was doin his darndest to make me laugh (nice...thanks man) and also got to edit at least a hundred photos i had been meaning to e-mail or discard.....the only awful part was the songs, cause there is no not hearin that, and no way in hell was i gonna sing, so of course people were prob raggin on me for that.

Thanks, yes I found Blondie's comments. (She posts them in the 'Friends' board now for some reason...wouldn't the "Bible Research and Study Articles" board be a better place?). I've posted some comments on the last weekends.

My comments:
Para 2: “Most of us have already responded positively to Jesus' kind invitation, and in the field ministry, we convey that invitation to others.”
That’s a misrepresentation! In all my years of going door to door I never once invited anyone to follow Jesus. Jehovah’s Witnesses NEVER discuss following Jesus and giving your life to him when they do their preaching. They only talk about Jesus obliquely in the context of talking about "the Kingdom", the future "paradise earth", or solving world conditions and suchlike, but you will never hear a JW talk about or focus on Jesus as your personal saviour. They invite persons to the organisation for their salvation, not the person of Jesus Christ. JW’s will show you a video on their Organisation before any video on Jesus.
Para 6:“Being followers of Christ means more than just calling ourselves Christian. Some two billion people claim to be Christian today, but their actions reveal them to be "workers of lawlessness." (Read Matthew 7: 21-23.) “
So the Watchtower Society has judged two billion people as “workers of lawlessness”. What disgusting judgmentalism and arrogance. Read those scriptures again. It is only Jesus who will at some future time judge who is a worker of lawlessness.
Para 11:“However, by persisting in the preaching work, we help others to respond to Jesus' invitation to follow him. Thus we help to save lives. (Read 2 Timothy 4: 1-5.)”
Another distortion of what JW’s really believe. JW’s believe that in order to survive Armageddon you must be JW. Even if you have dedicated your life to Jesus and are obeying his every command, you will not survive Armageddon if you are not in the organisation!
“Still, we recognize that maintaining our Kingdom Hall--the center of pure worship in the locality--is part of our sacred service.”
Yes, the local kingdom hall, a physical building, is the centre of pure worship for JW’s, not the person of Jesus Christ. What lofty language when talking about a mere Hall. You can see the proud and boastful emphasis on the all-important, physical ‘organisation’.
Para 12:“During his ministry, Jesus performed miracles, including healing the sick and raising the dead. But his main work was that of preaching the good news and teaching those who had listening ears. (Matt. 4:23) As his followers, we have the same work to do. How can we follow his example?”
Yes, how do JW’s follow Jesus example of helping the sick and suffering in their local communities? The answer is: they don’t lift a finger. Placing Watchtower Society literature and trying to bring people into the organisation (which means they won't die at Armageddon) is the only thing they do. It is their only motive and agenda.
Para 13:“By preaching with heartfelt enthusiasm, we convey to others our love for what Jehovah has taught us.”
Earlier in this paragraph they talked about truths Jesus taught but at the end of the paragraph they now refer to truths that “Jehovah has taught us”. This is a subtle reminder to JW’s that they have been taught all their truths by the Organisation that carries Jehovah’s name and they can show their love for Jehovah by serving that organisation's interests, which are the same as ‘kingdom interests’, with heartfelt enthusiasm.
Para 15:“When we reflect on the love that Jesus has for mankind in general and for us as individuals, our hearts are touched and we feel compelled to follow his example.”
Yes, Jesus loves mankind in general but, as you read earlier, the two billion or so persons in Christendom who profess to love Jesus are actually “workers of lawlessness” and so will be mercilessly slaughtered at Armageddon by him for all eternity, according to the Watchtower. How can anyone abide such perverse logic?

Weird Beliefs: a first page Google hit!
by og ini used to write and produce a little radio essay show in colorado called belief systems & other bs, and one of the shorts i recorded was called weird beliefs, and was based on my experiences attaining, maintaining, defending, questioning, and ultimately denouncing all the strange ideas i had to keep in mind in order to be, then stop being, a jw.
here's an excerpt:.
"that may be the point; one purpose of weird beliefs is to serve as barriers to entry.

Very interesting. I often wonder why the JW's have to make life so hard for themselves by having so many stupid, weird beliefs.

My radical shifts
by AK - Jeff infor the best part of 48 years of my life, most would not be able to separate the views i had at 18, with those i ended my witless career at 48.. now, over a period of 5 years, i have changed, molded, vascilated regarding spirituality, religion, god, sex, money, nationalism, etc, etc., almost more times than i can count.
my views are constantly morphing.
sometimes i feel like i have no foundation for any of my values.

Since leaving the religious organisation I was born into (JW's), the one thing I've come to realise the most is: Just how hard it is to know what to believe and what not to believe and just how much information and disinformation there is out there. In essence , m position has moved from one of arrogant cocksureness on many things to a more moderate view, with a lot more healthy scepticism. Nevertheless there are many interpretations of the Watchtower I have completely rejected.
Since leaving the organisation about 10 years ago and going on my own personal journey of trying to get a much deeper and wider understanding of many things of a spiritual theme, I've really come to appreciate how utterly foolish it is to form black and white conclusions about nearly anything. I've discovered there are nearly always shades of grey. There is nearly always some vital piece/body of information or fact/s no one is aware of (or the majority are not aware of) that can completely change the picture. Sometimes its just a little obscure point or comment you read that puts something into a completely new perspective, and sometimes it's a large chunk of research you were previously unaware of that shatters, moulds, or reinforces a previously held belief.
On that note, I notice you still seem to be suffering from thinking in terms of absolutes, eg, your comment that you absolutely do not believe the bible and that you think its all myth or forgery. That's the kind of erroneous, black and white mode of thinking that JW's and most religious people suffer from, except you are doing it from the other end of the spectrum. It's always unwise to think in such terms. Why not take a moderate approach like: "I believe the bible has some truth in it and wisdom, spiritually and historically speaking, but I am sceptical/disbelieving of miracles and supernatural accounts recorded in it." Or similar. It's never wise to have a very polarised opinion on any subject that is generally debateable.

What do you think about this letter to the JC???
by tsar_robles inhi guys and gals... you've probably read my earlier post regarding the prodigal son question and how the jc sent me packing... well, after talking with a good friend of mine i decided to move a new cong.
where the elders have known me for many years and actually appreciate me as a person... at first i was planning on handing this letter in person so i went but their meeting time had changed so i called one of the elders in my reinstatement jc and asked him for the meeting days but he said 'it would be better if i mailed it' to which i replied 'do you just not want me around your congregation, is that it?
he said again it would just be better to mail it again and left it at that.

Your letter is deeply personal and heartfelt but I'm sorry but it definitely does come across as desperate, gushy, grovelling. I would never dream of pouring my heart out like that to a bunch of business-like, by-the-book, yes-men elders, which most of them are. Don't throw your pearls before swines is all I can say. If you want to get reinstated, just do it like a man and don't write a lot of fluffy sentimental guff about crying and vomiting and such-like. It's just embarrassing and doesn't win their respect.

Birthdays, ISOCF
by compound complex inpersons among the witnesses have been disfellowshiped for holding birthday celebrations.
the core of the watch tower argument seems to be based upon the principle of guilt by association - that because only pharaoh and herod are mentioned in scripture as celebrating birthdays, and because these were wicked men, therefore the celebration of a birthday is necessarily wicked also.
[53] this is certainly a forced conclusion.

Birthdays should absolutely be a conscience matter. As Ray Franz noted, if the bible does not condemn things PER SE then there should be liberty to according to one's conscience. This goes for anything not overtly condemned in scripture (eg, smoking also). The Watchtower are indeed presuming to know God's mind on such matters.
But in my opinion the Watchtower is very insightful and correct to say that the star that guided the magi was not of God. It's inconceivable it was from God given that scripture condemns magic and astrology. I think the Watchtower deserves credit for that instead of going along with the traditional, sentimental view held by broader Christendom.
